Auf jedem Stargate sind 39 (in der Milchstraße) oder 36 (in der Pegasus-Galaxie sowie auf dem Stargate der Destiny) Symbole abgebildet, aus denen sich die Toradressen zusammensetzen. Die Symbole stehen häufig für Sternbilder. Zieht man zwischen jeweils zwei Sternbildern einer Adresse eine imaginäre Linie, so befindet sich am Kreuzungspunkt von drei solcher Linien der zugehörige Standort des Zielortes. Das letzte Symbol der Adresse ist das sogenannte Ausgangssymbol, es symoblisiert den aktuellen Standort.

Symbole auf dem Erd-Stargate

Diese Symbole finden sich auch auf allen Stargates in der Milchstraße wieder, lediglich das Ausganssymbol variiert. Jedem Symbol ist eine Silbe bzw. ein Laut zugeordnet, der (soweit bekannt) in Klammern angegeben wird.

Ausgangssymbole

Zusätzlich zu den normalen Symbolen gibt es auf dem Stargate auch jeweils ein Symbol für den Ausgangsort. Dieses Symbol unterscheidet sich auf den meisten Planeten. Es ist das letzte Symbol einer Adresse.

Es gibt zwei Arten von Ausgangssymbolen. Die einen stellen keine Sternenkonstellation dar und sind normalerweise nicht auf dem DHD zu finden. Ein solches Ausgangssymbol hat zum Beispiel die Erde, es symbolisiert eine Pyramide mit der Sonne darüber. Die anderen sind gewöhnliche Sternenkonstellationen, die auch für andere Adressen gebraucht werden. So hat Chulak zum Beispiel „Schlange“ als Ausgangssymbol.
